My rural route mailbox is located on the opposite side of the road from my house. One bright and sunny day while strolling back from the mailbox after retrieving the mail, I found myself confronted by my neighbor’s 85 -pound Black Labrador Retriever.

Startled by the shrill sound of the alarm Sheree’s head jerks from her pillow with whiplash force. Reaching blindly for her noisy bedside companion, she knocks it off the nightstand and it continues its feverish pitch from the floor.  Still disoriented from sleep she has to hunt for it several moments before finding and silencing it.

The pleading in her eyes, as she reached for my hands was my undoing as she stood there gazing down at me.  I should not have looked into her eyes or allowed her to touch me.  My heart was lost to her bidding as after a longing plea and a gentle tug I allowed myself to be pulled across the dance floor as the DJ blasted the next song; The Electric Slide.
